Dan Westfall

Paris, Versailles
Guest artist - January 2003

"Through photography, my goal is to convey a unique sense of time and composition by combining unappreciated manmade beauty with symbolic gestures of what I refer to as " the natural elements." B/W photography aids expression greatly with its distinctive qualities of dimension and depth.
I feel photography is done in two equally important phases. First you should know what makes a good shot by combining interesting subject matter with light and composition. The second phase is in the darkroom. Types of paper, contrasts, balancing, cropping, etc…all have to come together to make that exceptional photograph. I do all of the work myself. For materials, I use a wide range of films and paper to reflect my interests and expression. Generally the inventory will be 60% B/W, 20% sepia and 20% color.
My theme is primarily European cemeteries and architecture. My photos show highly skilled works of art that are usually unseen and unappreciated. The diversity of countries and subject matter in my portfolio range from classic cities such as Paris, Prague, Rome and Budapest to Art Nouveau in Latvia, castles in Slovenia and churches in Russia to name a few. During the past five years, I have made eight tours of Europe for photography purposes.
